Toxic masculinity, a social condition that dictates men must act a certain way in order to be acceptably manly, has damaged portrayals of male friendships; popular ***ure too often settles for ___11___: men talk about sports, boast about sex, and don’t touch one another. They see that joy and luck do not mean the same to their daughters, that to these ___15___ American-born minds "joy luck" is not a word, it does not exist. It seemed to me that Antigone might work as a/an ___19___ to the trend championed by recent feminists to seek the backing and authority of the state to implement feminist policy aims. The legacy of Antigone’s defiance appeared to be lost in the contemporary efforts to recast political opposition as legal plaint and to seek the legitimacy of the state in the espousal of feminist claims.

A photograph is both a ___20___ and a token of ___20___. Like a wood fire in a room, photographs—especially those of people, of distant landscapes and faraway cities, of the vanished past—are incitements to reverie. The sense of the unattainable that can be evoked by photographs feeds directly into the erotic feelings of those for whom desirability is enhanced by distance.

They may love other individuals far better than their relatives—they may even cherish dislike, or positive hatred, to the latter; but yet, in view of death, the strong prejudice of  ___21___ revives, and impels the testator to send down his estate in the line marked out by custom so immemorial that it looks like nature.

The “given” consists, in the first place, of a number of written narratives, some of which, for somewhat arbitrary reasons, we choose to call history. It is rather ___22___, for instance, to insist upon history being exclusively concerned with human beings. A good deal of history is done by scientists—as in the theory of natural selection. A good deal of cosmology and physics deal with time sequences that involve no human beings. Why, then, should we confine our interest in the past to the dramatic episodes occurring in the thin slice of the last 15,000 or 20,000 years?
(A) parochial                                                        (B) solecistic                                                         (C) peripatetic                        (D) impuissant                                                                        (E) rapacious

The real measure of Kuhn's importance, however, lies not in the infectiousness of one of his concepts but in the fact that he singlehandedly changed the way we think about mankind's most organized attempt to understand the world. Before Kuhn, our view of science was dominated by philosophical ideas about how it ought to develop ("the scientific method"), together with a heroic narrative of scientific progress as "the addition of new truths to the stock of old truths, or the increasing approximation of theories to the truth, and in the odd case, the correction of past errors,” as the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy puts it. Before Kuhn, in other words, we had what amounted to something verging on the ___23___ of scientific history, in which past researchers, theorists and experimenters had engaged in a long march, if not really towards “truth," although at least towards greater and greater understanding of the natural world.
(A) ornamentation                                                (B) sumptuousness                                                (C) vicissitudes                        (D) verisimilitude                                                                (E) amelioration

Answers and Explanations

9: B. paradox:a statement that is seemingly contradictory or opposed to common sense and yet is perhaps true.
10. E. AN imminent threat
imminent: about to happen   eminent: standing above others in some quality or position
11. E. stereotype: thought widely adopted about specific types of individuals or certain ways of behaving intended to represent the entire group of those individuals or behaviors as a whole
caricature: exaggeration by means of often ludicrous distortion of parts or characteristics
12: A. Since the author implies that "advocates of the mimetic theory" consider "decorative and abstract art" in a rather negative light, it can be reasonably inferred that "the mimetic theory of art" subscribes to the assumption that art is "concrete" or "figurative." In context, the "problems" are caused by or related TO the mimetic theory, choices that follow the idiomatic convention of verbal phrases are A, B, and C. Thus, the best choice is A.
delimit: to fix or define the limits of
13: E. The colon often functions as the marker to remind readers that what follows it explains or expands on what preceeds it. Therefore, the first missings words needs to capture the essence of what comes after the colon: "the consistent sensibility which underlies and gives rise to a certain taste." The key phrase here is "consistent sensibility," which describes two qualities that the word should be able to convey. The only words that fit here are in D and E, namely "logic" and "rationale." As for the second blank, we can deduce from "Any sensibility that can be crammed into the mold of a system, or handled with the rough tools of proof, is no longer a sensibility at all" that a sensibility can't really be "crammed into the mold of a system or handled with the rough tools of proof." In other words, a sensibility cannot be expressed in the linguistic apparatus with which we reason and explain. "Ineffable" conveys the idea effectively.

14. B. The act of "White" Hawaiians affirming the colonial order is most suitably interpreted as one that struggles for suborniate "supremacy," or the state of being the secendary supreme. The correct choice can also be reasonably deduced from the nature of "struggling for" and the difference between "preemption" and "supremacy."
15. B. This question asks about the attitudes of the two parties--Chinese immigrant mothers and their American-born daughters--towards each other, and it doesn't take a polymath to see that they are not that hot on each other. On the contrary, there's quite some frustartion and disappointment in exchanges. The only choice that fits, therefore, is B.
16. C. By logic, the second sentence expands on or gives explanations to the first sentence unless a new or contracdicting idea is introduced. That officers who commit opperesion will pass with immunity is not a concern because "the passions of the whole community" will effect on it. It is only reasonaly to pick words that indicate that the community will actively deal will the situation, thus "passions" to be aroused, "provoked,""agitated," or "revived." As for the second missing word, "divide" implies at least two different attitudes towards to "the accused" are to be mentioned. Since we have "more or less friendly" already, the other one would naturally be unfriednly, or "inimical."
17. E. It is only natural that a "supercilious," or haughtily disdainful or contemptuous, demeanor would "undermine," or weaken or cause to collapse, one's interaction with his/her/their co-workers.
18. A. By definition, a "prominent" man is one who stands out or has a high social standing and influence. The only word that matches the description is "clout," or influence or power.

奈落补丁

注意单词的价值取向。比如struggle for一般不会是struggle for oppression/demise/fiasco/debacle之类的
