PlayStation 3 to get more 3rd Party Support in 2009
A few months ago, the gaming community had its mind set that this generation is the end of 3rd party exclusives, and there will be a big push towards multiplatform. Over the past year, there were a lot of multiplatform games released from the older Oblivion, to the more contemporary Call of Duty, and to the more recent Bioshock.
There seems to be an agreement amongst gamers that the Xbox 360 always had the better version of the game because it’s easier to program for, and of course sometimes that is true, but I also picked the above 3 examples to illustrate the point that sometimes the sheep mentality can be quite deceiving. The PlayStation 3 version is not “always” the worst one, and sometimes it may even be the prefer version due to the free cost of PSN or the addition of Trophy (if you prefer it over the Achievement system on your Xbox 360). Or even better graphics (Oblivion), or extra contents (Bioshock/Eternal Sonata). Of course, some of these games are late to the table and I will not argue with you that if you had both machines you would have probably already played Bioshock. But setting these matters aside there is something else worth discussing today.
There is another misconception that the X360 was getting all the 3rd party love, with the stolen Final Fantasy XIII, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and Grand Theft Auto exclusivity. (Wow, I think I just listed some of the biggest titles that was on the PS2, now also on the X360). For hardcore, PS3 Fanboys, that was a bit disheartening at first, but we must realize that all these games that went multiplatform are still on the PlayStation 3 and it may well be the better version (I am also aware of the fact that now the game is multiplatform it may not utilize 100% of the PS3’s power, which is also quite disheartening). So how can anyone say the X360 has more games when all it has is multiplatform games that are also on the PlayStation 3 aside form a few gems such as Gears of War and Fable? I don’t want to go so far to say that the X360 is nothing but a generic, easily broken/RROD machine that plays mostly multiplatform games. No, that would be quite unfair; I think it has made its stride probably somewhere over the past 2 years making quite a dent in the seventh generation of gaming. But it looks like things are taking an un-suspected turn of event these past few weeks as big industrial leaders like EA and Ubisoft releases their fiscal earning report.
Let’s take a look at these numbers and we should dispel some myths. Myth number one being that the Xbox 360 Version of the game sell more copies (Which is not true worldwide, only true in the USA most of the time). Myth number two being that Xbox 360 has a higher attach rate (it does right now, but that was with a year of head start. Don’t forget that very important point).
Electronic Art 2009 First Quarter Fiscal Report. (Source∞)Platform Revenue
PS3 17%
X360 10%
PS2 10%
Wii 7%
PC 11%
PSP 7%
NDS 3%
Wireless 5%
Others (Publishing/Internet/Co-Publishing 30%
As you can see from the above chart, EA earn more money from PS3 than other consoles this fiscal year. Also Sony's three platforms combined is equals to 34% of the company's total revenue.
Now let's take a look at Ubisoft's first half 08/09 Sales Report (Source∞):
The six months total of 2008/2009 (fiscal)Platform Sales Percentage
NDS 38%
PC 10%
PS2 2%
PS3 20%
PSP 3%
Wii 11%
X360 14%
Again, the global sales of PS3 software wins again versus X360 and Wii with a lower total install base (about -5 millions versus the X360).
I hope you had fun looking at those data, and it really is quite baffling when people tell you 1) PS3 has no games and 2) PS3 is too expensive. Well, the PS3 has no less games than the X360 considering that it has most of what the X360 has plus all the 22 First Party and several Second party developer studios support. And with a yearly discount of 50 dollar on internet service and no hidden cost of build in WiFi and Harddrives as well as a BluRay player. It may just be the cheapest system to own. In the future, I wouldn't be surprise if EA or Ubisoft throw the PS3 one or two surprise exclusives a few more years down the line. For now, it's been a rough 2 years for PS3 gamers. But we are hanging on tight in this console war and we will not tolerate anymore misinformation about the system. As the owner of all three systems, maybe it is the only way that I saw the light while blind fanboys of either side misses the cave's entrance.
Until next time, see you gamers later and don't forget to check out our Anime∞ and Asian Drama∞.
