So Near, Yet So Far
Why Mirror's Edge is good rather than great
10 CommentsMirror's Edge is both the best and worst game I have ever played. It's neither good nor mediocre nor enjoyable nor boring. It's either really, really, really awesome or utter, utter, utter balls. And one change could have solved that.
Get rid of the combat. Seriously. Just get rid of the combat and you're looking at a game that's incredibly good fun, free-flowing and has a different vibe to anything else out there.
I know why the combat is included. Because the controls are fairly easy and it's not too hard to nip about the rooftops and buildings, the combat is thrown in as the 'challenge', the drive to keep you going and provide an element of danger.

But all it does is frustrate. It forces you to focus on the wonkiness of the control scheme that you were prepared to overlook with the luxury of time but suddenly start cursing when your virtual life depends on it. Why do I have to come to a complete stop before I shimmy across these bars? Why do I end up jumping over bars that I should barely reach? Why is everyone at the world shooting at me right now?
The good half of Mirror's Edge is when you're bounding about the rooftops. The bad half of Mirror's Edge is when you're trying to figure out what the game wants you to do while everyone is firing at you.
Imagine if Portal decided that rather than have the challenge of the puzzle rooms, it was going to have a small platoon firing guns at you while doing so. It would go from being an immensely enjoyable one to a stupid one, both because it'll be frustrating and because it'll just be nudging its unique style towards a guys 'n guns angle.
That's what Mirror's Edge does. It has the cool character, the cool city and the cool design and rather than having strength in its own conviction, it grabs at gunplay and muddies up its own ***tail with ingredients that just don't belong.
Mirror's Edge is good. Sadly, at this time of year, being good just isn't enough. |
