Sony Computer Entertainment is enhancing its support to PS3 developers by offering price incentives on its development hardware. The new Reference Tool PS3 models, which were introduced this month, are being sold at discounted rates. The DECR-1400A for North American and European/PAL regions is going for $2,000/?,700 respectively, while the DECR-1400J in Japan is priced at ?00,000. Of course, all this is only available to registered developers, much like the free PhysX SDK that was announced a few days back.
In addition to cheaper tools, Sony is also announcing a new version of its PhyreEngine -- an upgrade to 2.40. The graphics engine is getting a new "foliage rendering" system which gives more realistic rendering of trees and plants in games. PhyreEngine has been around since early 2008 and has been implemented in games such as Flower and Savage Moon. It will also be used in future titles Under Siege, Mars, and in these newly discovered games: Brooklyn Stories (working title), VectorCell's The 7th Seal (working title) and Ivent Games' third-person action game Strength of the Sword.

Incognito Entertainment's Dylan Jobe, director of Warhawk, has announced that he is leaving Incognito and taking other staff with him. The group has formed a new studio, Lightbox Interactive, which will relocate from Incognito's home of Salt Lake City, Utah, to Austin, Texas this fall "to take advantage of Austin's creative ***ure and its well established game development community."
PlayStation fanboys concerned about losing talent to one of the other platforms need not be concerned: Lightbox's website mentions that the new studio is under a multi-year contract with Sony to develop games for "the PlayStation family of platforms."
Well, now we know what Jobe will be talking about in the GDC "The Big Picture 2009: Managing Your Game Dev Deal and Operating Your Game Dev Studio" panel.

童年在大阪乡下度过,天生画才,同时懒散而且放荡不羁。别人都在读高中时,他不想多念书想早点出来工作,就去读技校;技校毕业之后又想考大学。老师说你这水平足以考多摩艺术大学,他却嫌多摩太远,就近去了大阪美术学院。大学期间偷懒选了抽象画作为主修专业,毕业的时候才发现自己电影没少看,游戏没少玩,自己却离艺术家这个理想越来越遥远了。于是他从家里骗了点钱,买了台Amiga电脑,自学3D动画,于是就成了当时非常稀缺的人才。Sega公司曾将他招安,无奈他觉得自己只是个3D民工,实在心有不甘,于是辞职。1998年时有朋友将他介绍到SCE,他画了3个月时间做了个短片作为面试作业,结果SCE求贤若渴,在他表示了“我是个艺术家,我要搞艺术品先”后,SCE回答道:“这里就是工作室,你就在这里搞艺术吧。”
于是,就有了那美若短诗的《ICO》和壮如史诗的《旺达与巨像》。这是他目前仅有的两个作品。. |
