What Natal Means for You
Natal is going to shake things up. Does that mean good things for you?

View all 8 videos ? After a year of hiding, Project Natal will have its big coming out party at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in just over two weeks. Up to this point we've had tons of speculation, but not much in the way of hard info. That may leave you wondering what the fuss is all about. Will it actually be the revolution Microsoft claims it to be? Is it something you should get behind? The technology has the potential to change gaming, regardless of your tastes. Today we take a look at what that potential could mean to each of four different types of gamers.
The Hardcore Gamer
You play videogames at least once a week, buy the hottest games as soon as they come out, and know that 60 frames per second is important for some reason.
If you're a hardcore 360 gamer, you're probably looking forward to Gears of War 3 and Halo: Reach this year much more than Natal. After all, every time Microsoft talks about Natal, they show off stuff that would be hot-selling titles on the Wii. But Natal will greatly impact your gaming life. We promise.
That change won't come immediately, but over the next year or two. Natal isn't just about controller-free gaming. It can be used to enhance the type of games you already love. It could mean added voice recognition for games so you can tell your squad what to do without having to wear a headset. Or it could mean role-playing games where you don't select responses from a menu, you say them directly to the other characters. Or in a racing game, slightly turning your head left or right can pan the camera as if you were in the driver's seat. There are infinite possibilities with Natal. It's up to developers to make smart choices and use Natal to take our favorite types of games and add a new level of immersion.
The Once Was a Gamer
You grew up with Sonic or Mario and have fond memories of them, but games these days have lost you. They're either too time consuming for your busy life or too complicated and overblown.
The Wii has introduced new people to gaming, but it has also brought with it a wave of nostalgia that has pulled many former gamers back into the fold. The simplicity and ease of use that Nintendo made a focus for the Wii has resulted in a resurgence of classic game types. Punch Out returned. Excitebike is back. Even Mario has returned to his roots with New Super Mario Bros Wii.
Will the same be true for Project Natal? Though Microsoft doesn't have a library of mascots it can turn to, Natal will force many developers to keep things simple. Xbox 360 has traditionally been known as the place to go to for shooters like Halo or Gears of War, but there may be a surge in games made that appeal to the more nostalgic gamer once Natal becomes a mainstay. Perhaps more games that remind you of simpler days will begin to catch your eye.
The Wii-kend Gamer
The lure of Wii Sports convinced you to buy your first game system, and you've bought a few games since then (including Wii Fit and New Super Mario Bros).
Your family really enjoys playing games, but it can be a shockingly steep investment after the cost of the initial system -- every family member needs his or her own controller, plus there's the cost of add-ons like a nunchuk or a Wii MotionPlus to consider.
The beauty of a camera controller like Natal is that one controller works no matter how many players want to participate -- you shouldn't need to buy a ton of extra peripherals for every member of your family to play. Now if you can just get your damn kids to stop jumping around in the background when it's your turn to go.
The Non-Gamer
You think videogames are mostly child's play, but you've seen enough people enjoying them now that you're more inclined to check them out.
Videogames might not have a place in your life, but you're definitely interested in checking out this new crazy camera controller that can put you in a game and let you interact with virtual characters. It's like living in the future!
One of the big barriers to playing games for you has always been the controllers -- even the Wii remote was way too complex, with its multitude of buttons and its crazy nunchuk attachment. However, the Natal camera lets you interact with a game just like you'd interact with your real-life world. Instead of having to press A to talk with someone, now you just talk. There's no more piece of plastic in hand that you don't understand, and a whole new world has opened up.. |
