Ubisoft Hard at Work on Developing Next-Generation Console Titles
French video game developer Ubisoft Entertainment SA (UBIP:PA) published an official press statement on Wednesday focusing on the company’s financials for the third quarter (September ending quarter) of 2012, with important details on its plans for the next generation of video game consoles. Ubisoft is the manufacturer of several popular video game titles, including the recently released Assassin’s Creed III.
The financial report, which included comments from Chief Executive Yves Guillemot, is indicative of Ubisoft’s initiative to create titles for the so-called Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox 720 and Sony Corp. (NYSE:SNE) PlayStation 4.
The report, which actually covers Ubisoft’s first quarter of the 2013 fiscal year, states that expenses for Research and Development (R&D) have increased by $17.3 million, or 12 percent year-over-year, a clear sign of next-generation console plans. At the present, Ubisoft has confirmed plans of developing titles that would work on the Nintendo Co. Ltd. (PINK:NTDOY) Wii U, a console set to debut on November 18 in the United States.
As it stands, Ubisoft is hoping that its plans would help strengthen its brand name, as it also tries new models of gaming, such as Free-to-Play.
According to Guillemot, “From a longer-term perspective, (the) WiiU’s [sic] progression and the arrival of the next generation of consoles, combined with the strong momentum in the Free-to-Play model for PC, mobile and tablet games, will enable us to capitalize on the investments we have made in recent years.”
