First spray

This was taken right after the coat of plastic primer was applied (Rustoleum's primer for plastic surfaces). Sorry for the fuzzy picture...
Last time I'll see silver

Right before applying the primer.
Removing the 'Nintendo' sticker

Masked top screen

This is the top of the unit (just the front half of it), with the top screen still inside (wasn't worth removing).
Back of top screen masked

This is the exposed rear of the top half of the DS. You can see the screen in the middle, and some wires and a ribbon cable @ the top. The clear material is a piece of anti-static bag that is taped on by the masking tape along the sides.

It wasn't worth removing the screen and all as it seems to be held in place somehow...and with the front screen cover in place, this seemed like the safest bet for the top screen's safety.
Small pieces after disassembly

Completely disassembled

DS Parts

Still removing the ribbon cable

Removing the ribbon cable

How to get the ribbon cable out?

Threaded through the hinge

Exposed top of the DS

Separated small wire

No speaker wires req'd

Separated the top

Almost lost this guy...

Screws behind bumpers

L trigger

Separated bottom

Screws

Cool lookin' battery

Ready to tear it down

1st White Coat

This is the 1st coat with krylon indoor/outdoor flat white.
2nd coat of pink

Well, this color is nothing like I expected, but I knew I was taking a chance : ) I'm not disappointed...it's just not what I expected. The primer and white base coat I used were both very flat paints, and made for a very rough surface onto which the pink was applied. I'm thinking one more coat & then about 3 clear coats before I call it quits.
Removing the top screen mask

I was too quick @ 1st when removing this masking tape, and peeled some paint off of the edge of the DS body near the screen. So I learned to use this pen knife to split the paint that connected the masking tape to the rest of the DS surface.
Attempting to re-thread the ribbon cable

Too bad I didn't know this when I took the picture, but I believe the ribbon cable is currently shown backwards. The bottom end is supposed to be on the top.
Correct ribbon cable orientation

This is the way the ribbon cable is supposed to be run (I got it wrong the 1st time).
The black wire is home again

Motherboard bolted in

Add the shoulder buttons

Decorative hinge screw

Don't wait until the end to put this in...I did and had to take the bottom off and then remove the motherboard, again.
There it is...done

You can see the rough finish...I'm somewhat disappointed in the way it came out, but @ the same time I had a ball doing it and hopefully I'll do it better (choose better paints) next time around.
Looks good against the dark bottom

Didn't get the backs of the hinges

I knew I was leaving these out...I was too lazy to remove the top screen, and didn't want to take the chance of directly spraying the back of the top screen area.

Lesson learned? You bet, remove the top screen next time, dammit!
Close-up of the hinge

Close up & personal

What it's all about...

Playing the freakin' games, man!
It works this time!

This was after I had the whole thing assembled and it didn't turn on...it would just "blip" and the screens would flash for a split second.

Turned out I didn't have that main ribbon cable pushed all the way into each harnesses before I locked it in.
Harness re-threaded and connected

Another gotcha that I didn't know when I shot this...when you slide the ribbon cable back into the harness on each end, make sure you push the cable all the way in before locking it.

I had the thing almost completely together 3 times, and one of the times I took it apart again was because I didn't push the cable in all the way @ each end before locking it.
Did a little hinge damage

Removing touch screen cushion masking

The nickels worked too

Masking holes

Top Screen's Rebirth : )

Damn! The 1st imperfection

.
