Will Microsoft Announce A Brand New Xbox Console Next Month?

E3 is nearly upon us, and it’s shaping up to be an interesting time. In many ways, the PS4/Xbox One generation came of age this year, with the first true slate of excellent current-gen exclusives across the board: I had a hard time choosing Games of the Year in 2014/13 for lack of options, but this year I felt the exact opposite problem. And it’s with that in mind that both Sony and Microsoft seem to be angling to push things forward, and sooner than previous generations would lead us to believe. Sony is widely reported to be working on what we could call a “PS4.5,” a 4K upgrade to the current platform codenamed Neo, likely releasing this year. Microsoft also seems to have some new hardware up its sleeve, but it’s a bit of a mystery as to what it will be.

Here’s what we know we’re not getting: an Xbox “one and a half” or somesuch — Microsoft has been pretty explicit that it’s not going to go that route. Here’s Phil Spencer:

“I’m not a big fan of Xbox One and a half. If we are going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers,”he said. “For us, our box is doing well. It performs, it’s reliable, the servers are doing well. If we’re going to go forward with anything, like I said, I want it to be really substantial change for people — an upgrade.”

That’s an important distinction. The concept of a “one and a half” refers directly to the PS4 Neo rumors, and Spencer’s statements make it seem highly unlikely that Microsoft will have a one for one answer to Sony in that department. So that leaves us with three essential options: an Xbox “Two,” an Xbox One slim, or some entirely unexpected piece of hardware. An Xbox Slim seems pretty likely, I would guess: not only is it a totally reasonable thing to do at this point in the generation, but the Xbox One definitely looks like it could lose some weight without missing it. I’d bet that we’ll see something along those lines regardless.

说话听声、锣鼓听音儿，大当家这概念区别很重要。“半代升级（半新不旧）”明摆着是指索尼要推出NEO主机的传闻。斯宾塞的意思好像微软不可能跟着索尼的步子起舞。那么摆在咱们这些看客面前大概有三种可能：彻底换代的新机器、薄版主机、或是其他出乎预料的新硬件。我想薄版主机很有可能会出来，一来因为在当下出本世代薄版机的时机已经成熟，二来Xboxone实在也该减减肥。我想我们今年肯定会看到点什么新玩意。

That doesn’t mean we won’t also see that major generational shift that Spencer is referring to, however. such a shift would be a pretty bold move just a few years into this generation, but this generation is already shaping up pretty differently than those that came before it. The Xbox One was developed at a very different Microsoft than what we’ve got today, and Phil Spencer has been very clear about the continuing effort to merge the console business into the broader Windows business. A new console could be just the ticket for that, as well as a way to re-energize the Xbox business in the face of the indomitable PS4. It would be a massive risk, of course, but without some big change it’s hard to see the Xbox One doing anything but continuing to lose ground to the PS4.

这并不意味着咱们就看不到斯宾塞大掌柜所谓的“地覆天翻”了。然而，刚进本世代几年就改弦更张，实在是个相当大胆的变动，不过，本世代游戏机市场的情势已经跟前面几个世代大不相同。我们今天手上的Xbox one已经比早前的Xbox one更符合”微软主流“了，斯宾塞大掌柜很明显一直在坚持把主机业务与Windows业务融合在一起。一台新主机将成为进入整合Win业务与Xbox业务的门票，以便为XBOX注入能量来应对作风顽强的PS4。当然这会冒很大风险，但是如果不作出改变，Xbox One只会继续在PS4面前丢城失地。

If Microsoft only announces an Xbox One ‘Slim,’ with neither an upgraded console to answer the PS4 Neo nor an entirely new console to get ahead of the game, it’s going to have bad time. But CEO Satya Nadella has been clear that the company is indeed serious about the Xbox business, and that’s why a major announcement isn’t out of the question.

如果微软仅仅宣布一台薄版主机而没有升级版机型来应对PS4 NEO，或者不推出全新主机来谋求翻盘，微软的游戏机事业将进入“窝工时间”。但是CEO纳德拉已经明确表示，微软公司的确在认真对待Xbox事业。这就是为何笔者认为新主机必将面世的原因。
