As the minutes tick by in the wait for the World Cup quarter-finals to begin, Chelsea players have been discussing their progress so far and the challenge ahead.

Both Joe Cole and Frank Lampard have acquired the winning habit during the last two domestic seasons. With England’s failure to find top gear the nation’s current No. 1 talking point, they have emphasised the importance of results over performance.

“If we had played brilliantly against Ecuador at the weekend but were going to have to pack our bags and go home, we would have been gutted,” said Cole.

Lampard backed that belief by saying: “We’ve been in quarter-finals before and we have been knocked out. That's not good enough for us with the players we have got. This is a real moment for us and we are determined to seize it.

Cole, Lampard and Terry will be looking to get the better of a familiar figure in Ricardo Carvalho but it has been confirmed that another player who is no stranger following Chelsea’s recent battles with Barcelona will not be playing. FIFA have advised Portugal not to appeal against the decision that led to Deco’s sending-off in the last game.
