The game is terribly misrepresented by this score. For everyday readers wanting to know what a real review would sound like:
Granted, it doesn't deserve a 9 or 10. But honestly, if No Man's Sky (which had NO ACTIVITIES and in which fast traveling was the HIGHLIGHT of the game) got a 7/10 on this site, this game deserves an easy 8, and if half-points were still given, I'd argue an 8.5.
Lighting/texture issues are minor. Glitches are rare. In about 40 hours, I've had ONE hard crash, and two optional side mission/fetch quests unable to initiate. None of these are enough to sully the best parts of the game.
The best parts are the story, setting, dialogue, and characters— it's very rare in games where I find these cinematic elements this believable and interesting. The huge map, varied topography, vehicle/weapon design, soundtrack... they all add something very cool to the experience.
Gameplay is good enough, and gun play is usually okay-to-good, but sometimes very satisfying (depending on the situation). The driving didn't bother me at all— it's not near as bad as Watch Dogs was. In fact, I enjoyed Watch Dogs (which got an 8/10 here), but I'm enjoying Mafia 3 more.
I don't quite understand the critique "there's not much to do" while at the same time "too many repetitive missions"... pick one. There's a lot to do in this game, mainly in the form of smaller "destructive" objectives (think of the "chaos" system in Just Cause 3, which got an 8/10 BTW) which build up to a bigger, cooler story set piece mission. They can be somewhat repetitive in design, yes, but that's okay as long as it's fun, right? Most games are that way to some degree— establish the gameplay loop and then repeat it. I hate to bring it up again, but No Man's Sky was the dullest, shallowest, most repetitive 7/10 I've ever played... and it's better than this game? Not by a mile.
Honestly, the best comparison is Assassin's Creed Syndicate. Both of these games have interesting, well-designed settings, similar structure in terms of story and upgrade progression, decent graphics and animation, and advanced character development. Both are third-person action, both were similarly hyped, and both have minor technical issues. Syndicate got a 9/10! And having played and enjoyed both, I think Mafia III might be a bit stronger than Syndicate in the areas where they are both strong.
If you were looking forward to this game and haven't played it yet, PLAY IT. I promise, you won't be disappointed. If you were on the fence or "meh" or skeptical to begin with, take it or leave it, because if you're that guy, you probably won't be completely happy either way.
Final note: I realize these reviews are subjective (as is mine), but you have to grade these games against each other. If Murdered: Soul Suspect got a 6, Mafia III should be a couple points higher, no question. And I guess if you want an 8/10, you'll have to go with something less repetitive, like this year's Madden xerox (*eye roll).
