This game is absolutely terrible
I was a huge fan of DoW 1 and 2. Been a Warhammer fan my whole life and played the tabletop games and everything. If you enjoyed any aspects of the first 2 games, do not even bother with this one. I will not be buying this game.
I'll do a quick pros and cons list from my impressions of the beta.
Pros:
+ Visuals are pretty good. Wish you had more control over the camera like the previous games though.
+ Runs VERY well - is extremely well optimized even for a beta.
+ Sound design is on point.
Unfortunately the pros end there, so here are the cons:
- No static defenses that you can build? Can't build any turrets or anything to defend your base.
- You need an entire army to take out listening posts. They are WAY too strong.
- There is no strategy involved thanks to map design. Build a massive army, select all and attack move to where you want to go.
- Elite Units are literally called "Assassin", "**", "Support". This is an RTS or a ♥♥♥♥ing MOBA?
- The win conditions. Literally cannot win any other way. 1) Destroy shield generator. 2) destroy a giant turret. 3) destroy the enemy's "core." If I wanted to play League of Legends or Dota I would do that.
- "MASSIVE BATTLES" my ♥♥♥. In both previous DoW games you purchased a unit and were able to add units to it. In this game, a squad is a squad. No adding captains, extra units, or special units to a squad of troops. Which leads me to...
- When upgrading a Space Marine squad (not sure if this is the same with other armies) with something like plasma guns, the ENTIRE SQUAD gets it. Previously you could select one or more upgrades and a single unit in the squad would get that upgrade. This is especially ♥♥♥♥ when you have a devastator squad and want to have someone with a heavy plasma gun, heavy bolter, etc. Nope. It's all or nothing this time around.
- Squad customization and uniqueness is non-existent.
- No squad veterancy. Meaning all squads that are not hero (or Elite) units are cannon fodder meant to just die.
- The cover system. Won't even bother wasting time talking about how ♥♥♥♥ it is compared to the previous games.
- The elite units. Holy ♥♥♥♥ these are stupid. In previous games your hero unit was scaled appropriately. In this game they are about 3x larger than any other unit of the same type and do ♥♥♥♥ing anime flips in Gabriel's case. What a joke.
- Upgrading your "keep" gives you access to literally nothing besides "make my resource points give me more resources"
- No concede or surrender or gg options. Can't chat with your opponents, can't leave a game even if after 20 minutes you know you can't win. Really fun to have to leave the game and get 0 exp or currency.
- No comeback mechanics. If you lose fights at the beginning of the game and don't secure as many points as your opponent, there is no way to come back. Thanks to the map design, if you go to attack any resource points you can expect the entire enemy army to be there before you are done attacking any upgrades or listening posts. You aren't winning in the first 3-5 minutes of the game you may as well just leave.
- Map design is ♥♥♥♥. They seriously are trash.
I could keep going with the cons, unfortunately. Play the beta yourself and give it a go. Just posting this as a warning to any fans of the previous games because this is NOT AS ADVERTISED. This was supposedly "The best of DoW and DoW2 mixed into 1!!!!"
It's not. Do not pre-order and make sure you play this game beforehand if you were curious about it. Game is an absolute travesty.
Edit: Someone linked an awesome video that explains a lot of my thoughts as well. Worth a watch. |
