November 27, 2006 - The latest installment in a legendary game series is making its way from the TV screen to the portable screen. Next week, Metal Gear Solid fans will have a chance to add a little stealth to their holidays with the release of Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops for the PSP. An action title with a healthy dose of strategy thrown in, Portable Ops continues the adventures of Naked S*** from MGS3: S*** Eater in a new theater of war. Fortunately, IGN's been enlisted to bring you the details of S***'s newest fight. All this week, we'll be highlighting the key facets of this title, from the storyline to the new gameplay modes.

We'll kick today's coverage off with a special treat for Metal Gear Solid fans. We managed to get Ryan Payton, Associate Producer at Kojima Productions, to sit down and answer some of the questions that you submitted to our boards about Portable Ops. How are the single player and multiplayer games in Portable Ops? How did the controls translate over to the PSP? Will there be a sequel? All these questions and more are answered below.

IGN: How close to an actual Metal Gear Solid game is this in terms of gameplay? Or is it somewhere in between Acid and the original 3?

Ryan Payton: Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (MPO) has no relation to the Acid series. One of the first steps in developing MPO was to place the existing MGS3: Subsistence engine on PSP -- so what you're getting here is a brand new game built off of the Subsistence infrastructure. Everything that you'd come to expect in a MGS title -- sneaking, first-person view, CQC, using enemies as shields... it's all present. This was quite a chore to implement and playtest into the game, but I think MGS fans will appreciate having all of S***'s moves available in a new game on PSP.

IGN: Approximately how long is the campaign the 1st time through?

Ryan: That's a good question. That depends on whether or not you're a player who takes on sub-missions (since there are a lot in MPO).

Throughout the single-player campaign, players must send out their Spy Unit to extract intel from certain positions on the map. Often times a Spy Unit will issue a report, thus unlocking a sub-mission.

The game has dozens of these sub-missions, and I encourage everybody to play all the sub-missions to get rare weapons (RPG-7, Mosin-Nagant) and unique characters. But to answer your question, I think a normal playthrough of the game will consist of 15 to 20 hours.

The cool thing is how the single and multiplayer modes are totally integrated, thus prolonging the life of the campaign mode. Online is accessible from the campaign mode for good reason -- players bring one of their 1P Sneaking Units to the online arena. Good players will form a balanced (four person) team filled with unique characters, snipers, handgun experts, etc. In order to put together the strongest, most balanced team, players will need to return to the single-player campaign to recruit new characters including our hard-to-get boss characters.

IGN:What exactly is the deal about MPO and MGS4?

Ryan: MPO plays very well into the Metal Gear Solid mythos. The game is set six years after Operation S*** Eater, and a lot of water has passed under the bridge in the MGS universe. Big Boss (Naked S***) is no longer a member of FOX, the Cold War is still in full effect, and a lot of new players have come to power within the FOX Unit.

For those who have beaten MGS3: S*** Eater, I think they're in for a real treat with MPO -- we reveal some massive revelations about Naked S***'s involvement in Operation S*** Eater. And I don't want to spoil anything, but the events of MPO also have a direct relation with what occurs in MGS4. In other words, in order to fully understand what happens in MGS4, you'll need to have played MPO.

IGN: How will Wi-Fi work?

Ryan: We have a number of Wi-Fi-enabled modes. First off is Game Sharing, allowing you to play MPO multiplayer with friends who don't own a copy of MPO. We also have a full-fledged Ad-Hoc multiplayer mode for six players, but I strongly encourage everybody who picks up MPO to experience infrastructure-based multiplayer.

As somebody who owns a PSP (well, two), I've rarely felt satisfied with the online offerings of PSP titles. But the whole idea of raising a unit, tweaking them for the best online performance, and taking them online for casual or hardcore matches is something that really appeals to me as a gamer.

Players can have up to a hundred comrades in their FOXHOUND unit. Once you hit that limit, it's best to discharge the weaker soldiers, turn on the Wi-Fi switch of your PSP, head outside, and scan for internet hotspots. Granted you're in an area with a lot of wireless routers, you'll be able to easily pick-up new comrades and integrate them into your unit everything you pick-up a new signal.

IGN: How did you guys work around the PSP's lack of an analog stick?

Ryan: That was a concern from the very start of the production. One element we implemented into MPO to assist players is the Surround Indicator, our new radar that allows players to literally see the sounds surrounding them. This helps players get a fix on their environment and the location of enemies without having to spin the camera around with a right analog stick.

For me personally, I find myself clicking or holding the L Button when I run through stages. The L Button readjusts the camera to the default camera position. After a few minutes, I think most players will quickly adjust to the new control scheme. Especially since the PSP still has all the face buttons, MGS players will feel right at home with MPO.

IGN: What was your favorite bit about making the game?

Ryan: That's an easy question -- Working on the sequel to S*** Eater! I played MGS3 as a fan back in 2004, never thinking that I'd be working on the script and recording dialogue with David Hayter and company for a direct sequel. It's been a dream come true.

Working with Ashley Wood on the cinematics has also been incredible. This is the project we've always wanted to do together -- a brand new chapter in the MGS series with full voice-acting for all the cutscenes. Working with Mr. Hayter and Mr. Wood on the evolution of Big Boss as a character has been awesome.

IGN: How many levels of diffi***y are there?

Ryan: Three in total. Easy, Normal and you can unlock Extreme after completing the campaign mode once.

IGN: Is there an official soundtrack?

Ryan: The official soundtrack is coming to Japan. It's a forty-four track, beast of a soundtrack. Norihiko Hibino, best known for his composition of the S*** Eater theme, is back with some really cool tracks for MPO.

Last night the MPO sound team got together for a post-project celebration. It was a very festive environment. Not only because every sound team member in Kojima Productions worked really hard on MPO, but because we really think we've gone way beyond any gamer's expectations for a portable game soundtrack.

My hat goes off to Akihiro Honda, the sound director of MPO. He put his heart and soul into the project, and the outcome is something we're all very proud of. Don't believe me? Download the TGS trailer of MPO and tell me the game's soundtrack isn't incredible.

IGN: Are there plans to port Portable Ops to the PS2, in the event that the game receives poor sales on the PSP?

Ryan: Absolutely not.

IGN: When will it release in Europe?

Ryan: We'll be making an announcement about the European version very soon.

IGN: Will there be sequels if this proves to be the PSP's killer app?

Ryan: Absolutely. If the response to MPO is as good as we're expecting, you can look forward to new chapters in the Big Boss legacy on PSP. We still have many stories to tell about the early years of Metal Gear Solid -- I hope we can continue to do that on PSP.

Thanks to everybody for their great questions. It's hard to believe that MPO is coming out next week! Call me a cheater, but in the meantime I'll be busy beefing up my unit for all the online matches that will ensue after December 5th. Look for me online (Screen name: Novery).

Check back tomorrow and every day this week as we explore more of the Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops universe.

Thanks to Ryan Payton at Kojima Productions and Marc Franklin at Konami for the interview, and to our readers for their questions..
