16. Mathieu Flamini
Mathieu joined Arsenal from Marseilles in the summer of 2004 and is now an established member of Arsène Wenger's squad.
The young Frenchman is an industrious midfielder with a great engine, a big heart and good technical ability. You can add versatility to that list of attributes after his star turn as an auxiliary left back last season.
Mathieu was drafted into that unfamiliar role after a raft of injuries decimated Arsène Wenger's defensive options. Before long he was nullifying stellar names like David Beckham and helping Arsenal keep a record 10 consecutive clean sheets during their run to the Champions League Final.
The France Under-21 international represented his country at the European Championships during the summer in his more familiar midfield role and was back in the engine room during pre-season. With his reputation enhanced, Mathieu will be hoping to make his mark in that position during the new season.
My Year
October
October was a relatively quiet month for the young Frenchman. He did not feature in the first three games against Watford, CSKA Moscow and Reading but played a full 90 minutes as a young Gunners side progressed into the Carling Cup Fourth Round with a 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion. The former Marseille man was introduced as a 39th-minute substitute in the 1-1 draw with Everton after Justin Hoyte limped off. Earlier in the month he played a full 90 minutes for Arsenal Reserves but could not prevent a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Chelsea. |
