Oliver Kahn: 6.5 - Was helpless with Lucio’s goal and looked decidedly edgy under high-balls. Was substituted and looks doubtful for the return leg.

Phillip Lahm: 6.0 - Offers more in attack than defence and it was on his wing that Fayzulin reeked havoc in the second half.

Marcell Jansen: 6.5 - Not outstanding, but competent. Igor Denisov was kept in check while Ribery was afforded space on the left side by Jansen’s willingness to double his defensive responsibilities.

Lucio: 7.5 - Genuinely unlucky with the own goal; it blotted an imperious showing where he tackled, passed, dribbled, shot and competed with vigour and competence.

Martin Demichelis: 7.0 - Competed manfully with Pogremnyak, rarely losing a headed challenge and was a picture of composure. Vulnerable to strikers with speedy footwork.

Mark Van Bommel: 6.5 - a tenacious display from the Dutchman but was outfought by Tymoschuk more often than not. Distribution remains first rate.

Ze Roberto: 6.5 - Won the penalty and cleared from the line. Was effective in possession but was over-run at times.

Frank Ribery: 8.0 - A dazzling first half display from the world class winger. Faded as the contest tightened up.

Bastian Schweinsteiger: 6.0 - Made a number of erroneous decisions and his shooting let him down on occasion, not his best display.

Miroslav Klose: 6.0 - Tried to be forceful but could not elbow his way into the game. Limited chances.

Lukas Podolski: 6.5 - Looks a little ring-rusty. His shooting, had it been more polished, could have provided the win. Instead he was frustrated in the absence of Toni.

Subs:

Michael Rensing: 6.0 - Let one tame effort though his legs but coped well otherwise.

Christian Lell: 6.0 - Filled in late on for Schweinsteiger but made little effect.

Zenit:

Vychaslav Malafeev: 7.0 - Saved a penalty but was unlucky to see the rebound dispatched. Made a number of good saves but is more comfortable parrying and punching rather than catching.

Fernando Ricksen: 5.5 - Had to endure a torrent of pressure marking Ribery and conceded a penalty. A diffi*** evening for the veteran.

Ivica Krizanac: 7.0 - Competed well and was a nuisance for Klose.

Roman Shirokov: 7.0 Leaped and tackled well to bolster the centre of defence. Podolski and Klose got very little change from him.

Radek Sirl: 6.5 - Was positionally and tactically adept. Did not offer a lot above the required.

Anatoliy Tymoschuk: 8.0 - A great display from the Ukrainian. Ensured that his counterparts were never comfortable. Could have added a second for Zenit.

Konstantin Zryianov: 7.0 - Not the best of outings for the ex-Russian player of the year. Had a job to do and stuck with it.

Igor Denisov: 6.5 - Struggled against Jansen and very rarely passed him. Efficient in possession though.

Viktor Fayzulin: 8.0 - A great attacking display that saw him cross and shoot at the highest standard. Given too much space by Lahm however.

Andrei Arshavin: 8.0 - Another of Zenit’s star performers. Was a constant thorn in the second half and was the most capable Zenit player in a subdued first. Clever and tidy.

Pavel Pogrebnyak: 6.5 - Good foil for Arshavin but was unable to contribute much of his own.
