MICROSOFT'S new Xbox 360 sold over 30,000 units in its first four days on sale in Australia, new figures from industry analyst GfK show.
The result saw the Xbox 360 wrest the crown for best-selling games console launch from Sony's PSP, which sold over 27,000 units on debut in September last year.
GfK reported an average of 2.6 game titles sold with each console, giving credence to anecdotal reports of an average $960 total purchase by Xbox 360 buyers.
The GfK figures, which account for approximately 90 per cent of the retail market, measured sales from the Xbox 360's March 23 launch to Sunday March 26.
The midnight launch event is understood to have sold around 10,000 units.
The Xbox 360 is the first of the so-called next-generation gaming consoles to reach Australia. Sony's rival PlayStation3 (PS3) is scheduled to appear in November.
Microsoft Australia Xbox director David McLean said the company would "easily reach our launch window forecast".
"Australians are jumping into the next generation of gaming in a big way."
Mr McLean had previously told AustralianIT that pre-sale orders for the Xbox 360 accounted for as many as 45,000 units.
The fully-featured $649 "pro" bundle had accounted for the vast majority of early sales, he said. |
