GI: What was it like adding Sixaxis controls to Ninja Gaiden, and do you like the concept of the Sixaxis’ motion sensor?

Hayashi: When we were originally trying to figure out how to incorporate the Sixaxis functionality, people came up to us with a lot of different ideas, but one time I saw one of our designers playing—this was way back before there was any balancing done, and it was really hard—and saying stuff like, “Aw, damn it!” and I was like, “That’s it.” There’s your Sixaxis functionality right there. [laughs] Like I said earlier while we were playing the demo, it’s about trying to give the user the chance to give an input that’s a little bit more visceral, that’s a little more intuitive. It’s not necessarily about thinking and pressing buttons, it’s about getting your body involved. I think as developers, we think in terms of, “OK, if I move the controller right, I can turn my car right,” or “If I tilt the controller to the left, I can make my airplane tilt left,” and I think that we need to get above that and think, “What else can can we do? We have this functionality that’s built into the standard game controller, so it doesn’t need to replace that, per se.” We should try to add something with added value, if you will—something with a totally new paradigm in terms of the functionality. So I hope that people will in the future begin to think, “How can we use this to convey emotion?” or “How can we use this to provide an input that’s unique and separate from the button and lever control scheme?” On a related note, we were worried that people would hold their controller with a single hand and it would slip out and fly through their TV—we’ve all heard the horror stories. You know, we were originally thinking we should put some kind of warning message on the screen saying, “Please shake with both hands,” but we were lucky in that our programmers found a way to create a recognition scheme that could tell if you were shaking with only one hand or both hands. We were able to make it so it would only work if you were shaking it with both hands. This is not the Wii. This is the PlayStation. You’re holding the controller with both hands, you’d better shake it with both hands. You know, that’s just a side note to say there are so many things you can do with it. It’s a sensor. It senses things and provides you with feedback. It provides the computer with signals. The question is taking those signals and saying, “Let’s do something that’s really original and unique with it.”
