God I hope Blu ray wins this so that there can be no more format war. Seriously pick the best hardware (Blu Ray) already and put the cool HD DVD features on it.

Actually if I remember correctly HD-DVD is ACTUALLY the better format, Blu-Ray just holds more. (On a side note I'm hoping for blu-ray because I've got teh PS3)

I ain't buying shiat until they get it figured out. I have an XBox 360 and won't buy the HD DVD addon until things work themselves out. With PS3's and Sony behind Blu Ray its most likely to win though.

Please elaborate on how HD-DVD is the better format please? If you're refering to video and audio codecs, they both use the same formats.

Actually, once the iPhone is out, I predict no one will want HD movies anymore as the entire cell phone using world will rush to convert all existing Blu Ray, HD, and DVD movies to iPod sizes and resolutions. I've already got an 80gig, 2.5" iPod set up in my living room hooked up to my $10,000 Denon 9.1 surround system. You have to sit kinda close but man, what a viewing experience. Cant wait to dock my iPhone up to it.

Although I'd be happy if Blu-Ray one, it's hard to take such a lame story seriously. A tipster from an unnamed retail store said that orders of HD DVD players were canceled? Wow, what a scoop. At least give us the name of the store so we can determine if it's a decent sample of consumers.

Could be an interesting story, but not much info here as it is.

What I would like to see is all movie and format providers produce in both BD and HD DVD then let the manufactures of the players bring the best they have to the tables and let the consumer decide rather then letting who has the most movie studios behide them decide.Let the consumer decide not the Manuactures

Just because a source can't be listed doesn't immediately unsubstantiate the story. It just means someone wanted to share an observation, AND keep their job.

It's not isolated, and it's not a small sampling, and not believing it doesn't make it any less true. I don't own a Blu-Ray player, and just bought Planet Earth on HD-DVD, so Blu-Ray pulling ahead isn't exactly helping me any. Not to mention, I ***ing hate Sony. Believe what you want though.

Perhaps new sales of HD-DVD players are non-existent in your universe. But at Amazon, the top selling item in the DVD player category is the Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player. Toshiba has two other HD-DVD players (HD-XA2, HD-A20) in the top ten list as well.

The first stand-alone Blu-ray player, a Samsung, arrives in 15th place.

Does anyone here wish for BluRay to win as a sort of karma balancing for betamax?
06/19/07 05:06 PM
Image of Monty Monty says:

It appears Sony is going to win this, folks. They put all of their cards on winning the next-gen disc battle, and destroyed themselves in the next-gen game battle (at least for another year or more) just to win with Blu-ray. I think many of us were thinking this would be another Betamax, but that has not turned out to be the case. Sony is winning -- at the moment, handily, coming from behind in dramatic fashion.

Until the past couple of days, I would not have bought either one. Now, if I needed a high definition video player, I still wouldn't buy anything because Sony is going to lower the price of the PS3 soon. Once I can get a PS3 for $400, then I will consider entering the HD disc market.
06/19/07 05:10 PM
Image of Atrahasis Atrahasis says:

@ TonyD:

I think a lot of people are against Blu-ray because of Sony's history with trying to push proprietary formats on the public.

You just get the feeling that if they ever finally win one then they will have the last piece of the puzzle needed to fully pursue their nefarious plans for world domination.

Just wanna know how and when I can make copies of any HD/Blue Ray disk I own. I don't see why I can't make backup copies just like I can with DVD.

Until they figure out which one is king and there are burners available, I'll skip for now. Next 5 years maybe...DVD quality is fine on my HD Panasonic.

No commenter image uploaded deitiphobia says:

Sony freaking bought a movie studio and has invested billions into the development of PS3. Even if Blu-Ray wins over HD-DVD...it doesn't mean it will win against DVD or HD Downloads via the internet or IPTV.

Sony is far from turning Blu-Ray into even a moderate short term success but has nearly turned the PS3 into an abject failure.

No commenter image uploaded Johnal says:

RE: SchruteBuck
The idea that the *** industry will have a huge effect on the outcome of this format war is an outdated one. Although it may have played a large role in determining a winner during the betamax/vhs ordeal, people now have the option of the internet to get them what they are looking for. Don't get me wrong, sure it can/may make a difference to some degree, but not nearly as much as it did in the past.
06/19/07 06:24 PM
No commenter image uploaded andypennell says:

HD DVD is more technically advanced than BD. See [blogs.msdn.com]

BD is still promising features that HD DVD shipped with over a year ago (picture-in-picture, storage, networking, etc). Plus BD-J doesn't work on most BD players, except the PS3 (look for the videos on YouTube).

No commenter image uploaded hezz05 says:

Gotta have your ***? WTF are you doing on Gizmodo?

Seriously though, using *** as a factor of succes is ridiculous since the adoption of the internet platform. Porn is not decisive.

Anyhow, go Blu-Ray! Never understood why people wanted the superior format to lose. Besides, the introduction of two formats has only been good for us in price.

No commenter image uploaded jonyah says:

another great sign. I've been pulling for blu-ray from the beginning because it is just technically superior. The only real difference being that it holds more. HD-DVD just has no chance. Who's gonna buy a player that won't play any Disney hd movies or movies from any of Sony's studios?

No commenter image uploaded OldSchoolGadgetLover says:

Yikes... I wish this war would come to an end already. I really don't care who wins. But I want to get a decent reader / writer, and don't want to spend a lot of money of the type that handles both formats.

Thanks Blockbuster for trying to make this ugly thing come to an end, even if it was a flip of the coin kind of decision. I mean, it was a flip of a coin kind of decision, right? Sweet Betamax, the better player isn't going to lose again, is it? Oh yeah, who cares? Just so it ends.

Please fact check with stores. Wild rumors like this when reported by a news agency have an effect. Just report the news that you gotten from at least 2 sources. Otherwise you could be part of the marketing dept of a company. I know of many many people that bought a HD-DVD when matrix was released. There is another group buying when LOTR is released.

No commenter image uploaded BonoMan says:

I'm willing to bet, 10-to-1, that this is BS. It's probably some Blu-Ray fanboy making it up. Or rather they got 1 or 2 cancelled orders and, if they haven't gotten that many in the still fresh lifespan of HD-DVD, then they can say "more than over the entire lifespan."

I'm guessing it's a semantics thing...also most people wouldn't call in and say "Yep I'm cancelling because of Blockbuster!"

HD-DVD are supposedly cheaper to make and while a single layer can't hold as much as BR, HD-DVD can have more layers, for more total storage. Lower cost, higher capacity HD-DVD all the way. Sony is turning in to a major PITA that I hope they loose. Both discs use the same codecs so all the quality issues are moot.
06/19/07 08:04 PM
No commenter image uploaded dabu says:

As far as I know, there's nothing preventing BR from having as many layers as HD-D and as far as technical superiority, the only thing that HDD seems to have is picture-in-picture commentary.

And for all the HDD wackos that refuse to accept that BR will most likely win, who's willing to put money down?

what's with this PS3 is doing poorly bit? so they didn't sell as many as they projected for the first quarter of the year -- they fell half a million short. world-wide, the wii is doing well but not as big a gap as people in the states are thinking (roughly 300,000 more worldwide than PS3).

shouldn't people be finally happy that the format "war" is winding down or has the potential to? so what if it's not in your format. at least we know which format will probably win in the near future.

V for Vendetta is the only HD-DVD title that I really wish would have been on Blu Ray as well. I don't really care that much about The Matrix and it will be coming out on Blu Ray anyway. I think that if this coming week's HD-DVD titles don't put HD-DVD sales over Blu Ray for at least that week you may see Universal start supporting both formats. I wouldn't be surprised if this coming wave of releases is more a sales test than anything.
06/19/07 10:47 PM
No commenter image uploaded UncleRalphie says:

After all the millions that Sony lost on elcassettes, betamax, minidisc, and other forgotten formats, why not let them make a few bucks on Blu Ray? In a few years, most of us will be streaming our movies from AppleHD or GatesTV and it won't matter what kind of disk you use as a coaster.
06/19/07 11:21 PM
No commenter image uploaded Brian Lam says:

hd dvd is a more solid format. blu ray has nearly universal studio support. What's more important?
06/20/07 12:24 AM
Image of MegaZone MegaZone says:

1. BOTH formats have *** available. Sony does NOT block *** on BD, that was a rumor that was debunked.

2. HD DVD does NOT have more layers than BD. BOTH formats are single- or dual-layer. HD DVD has 15GB per layer, BD is 25GB per layer. Toshiba is *working on* a 3-layer HD DVD spec with 17GB per layer, for 51GB total. Which is just 1GB more than dual-layer BD. Meanwhile BD has been demonstrated in a few higher-density formats - 50GB layers with dual-layer 100GB discs. 4-layer 100GB discs, even 8-layer 200GB discs in the lab. But it doesn't much matter since all current players only handle dual-layer media. Studios aren't pushing for >50GB BD, but there is pressure for >30GB HD DVD, hence Toshiba's promotion of their efforts to grow it. Of course, then it isn't physically compatible with DVD plants, the only advantage to HD DVD.

3. BD is technologically superior. Wow, a Microsoft blog pushing HD DVD - could that be because MS has an interest in HD DVD? BD offers all of the features of HD DVD, and more. Now, it is true that the BD spec *requires* players to support less (BD 1.0) than the basic HD DVD spec, but there are higher level specs (BD 1.1, BD Live, etc) which vendors can choose to support, and the discs are fully compatible across layers. This allows CE vendors to compete on features. As the market grows we may see very basic players and loaded players. And the claim that all current players only support the basic 1.0 spec is wrong. The BD spec is also progressive, with new requirements being phased in as mandatory over time. This helped the format launch with more CE support - HD DVD's higher requirements contributed to its lackluster vendor support. Not a good move for HD DVD.

3. 'Rot' - please, just get over it. *Every* optical disc has had rot - LD, CD, DVD. BD's rot is a limited situation caused by a manufacturing glitch on one batch of discs. Big deal. I will bet you'll see HD DVD rot (if the format lasts a while), especially since DVD has rot and they're physically the same.

4. BD has Mandatory Managed Copy, just like HD DVD. It always had Managed Copy as an option, but they made it mandatory shortly before launch.
06/20/07 12:31 AM
Image of Bemaggot Bemaggot says:

It may be bad for Toshiba, but it's good for consumers. The sooner we eliminate one format, the better. Blu-ray, at this point in time, seems to be
the logical choice. More manufacturer support, and more storage make it a good candidate to take over for DVD. An on-going format war is just going to ensure that there will be a larger faction of consumers that loose out. I fully expect to see more manufacturers and retailers following suit before years end, so don't be suprised.

No commenter image uploaded AlanIn4D says:

blu ray will win the format war. everyone knows that as one format starts to win slightly over the other, just like the snowball effect, it will eventurally gain momentum and win over all.

but the sad thing is blu ray will quickly be replaced with holographic memory. Word on the street is that these holographic "cards" are FAR less expensive and take up less space, but actually will hold up to 1tb of memory per card. Actually combine holographic memory with some sort of tiny clear lcd display and you'll get those image discs so popular in the movie minority report..

Image of angryconsumer angryconsumer says:

Blu-ray will most likely win. The first major movie, such as maybe Star Wars on either format may change the momentum. Sony bet their balls on the line to win this format war. They sacrificed the PS3 to win the format war. If a Blu-ray player is dropped down to the $299 range, and fitted to compete against HD-DVD at that price point, Blu-ray will win because of the studio support.
