Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a surprising game. It completely uprooted the franchise’s beat ‘em up gameplay, replacing it with a jRPG-styled turn-based combat system. Despite closing the chapter on series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, Yakuza: Like a Dragon does a masterful job of introducing a whole new cast of characters, along with a compelling main story. Despite its slow start, Like a Dragon definitely hangs out as one of the best games in the franchise in terms of story, and that automatically makes it one of the best games of the year. What pushes it over the edge is the humanity that all of the characters display. Sure, Kasuga Ichiban is a certified badass, but more importantly, he’s also a lovable idiot. Small moments in Yakuza: Like a Dragon’s substories help flesh out characters, that show their more serious side in the main storyline. Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a tremendous first attempt at a turn-based combat system, and the franchise can only get better from here on out.

Ultimately, Yakuza: Like a Dragon feels like a complete experience. The story is fantastic, music is great, and the small-but-dense open world of Yokohama’s Isezaki Ijincho district has been wonderfully realised. There’s always plenty of stuff to do on the side, and the main story is definitely a roller-coaster ride of emotions. That’s why Yakuza: Like a Dragon is IGN India’s best game of 2020.
