Blizzard has tried to make a StarCraft shooter twice. Cancelled both times. They're about to try again.
StarCraft launched in 1998. Twenty-eight years old. One of the most influential RTS franchises ever made. Built esports in Korea before esports had a name.
And they've never successfully taken it beyond strategy games.
StarCraft: Ghost was announced in 2002. Third-person stealth action starring Nova, a psychic operative. Development bounced between three studios over twelve years. Console generations changed underneath it. Blizzard finally confirmed it was dead in 2014.
Then came Ares. Started in 2017. "Battlefield in the StarCraft universe." Terran marines gunning down Zerg. Built on the Overwatch engine. Led by Dustin Browder, the guy who shipped StarCraft II.
Cancelled in 2019.
The reason? Activision was uncomfortable. Ares looked too much like Battlefield. Battlefield competed with Call of Duty. Call of Duty was Activision's bread and butter. So they killed a StarCraft game to avoid competing with a franchise they didn't even own yet.
Now there's a third attempt. Dan Hay is leading it. He ran Far Cry at Ubisoft for a decade. Far Cry 3, 4, 5. The guy knows action games at scale.
BlizzCon 2026 is in September. Blizzard's 35th anniversary. Multiple sources say StarCraft will headline. These tickets will be gone in minutes.
Third time's the charm?
Here's what's different now.
Microsoft owns it all. No more classic Activision politics. No more protecting Call of Duty from internal competition. They already ship Call of Duty. They can ship StarCraft too.
The IP has been dormant since 2017. Nine years. Meanwhile they've been seeding StarCraft content into Diablo and Hearthstone. Testing whether anyone still cares.
They do.
Ghost and Ares weren't cancelled because they were bad games. They were cancelled because of politics and priorities.
The politics should be gone. The priority is clear. Xbox needs W's.
And if this actually happens? If BlizzCon opens with a Blizzard cinematic and we see a Terran marine drop from orbit into a Zerg swarm?
Drop mic.
Blizzard cinematics have always been special. They don't just announce games.
They make you believe. Twenty-plus years of false starts. Two cancelled projects. An entire generation of fans who gave up waiting.
September could finally deliver. I'll definitely be at Blizzcon for this.

暴雪嘉年华2026将在九月举行。暴雪成立35周年。多方消息称星际争霸将是主打。这些票几分钟内就会卖光。
第三次成功?
现在不同之处在于。
Microsoft拥有一切。不再有经典的动视**。不再保护使命召唤免受内部竞争。他们已经出货了《使命召唤》。他们也可以运送星际争霸。
该知识产权自2017年以来一直处于休眠状态。九年。与此同时,他们一直在向暗黑破坏神和炉石传说中植入星际争霸内容。测试还有没有人在乎。
他们确实会。
《幽灵与战神》被取消并不是因为它们是糟糕的游戏。这些活动因**和优先事项被取消。
**应该消失。优先级很明确。Xbox需要胜利。
如果真的发生了呢?如果暴雪嘉年华以暴雪过场动画开场,我们看到一个地球陆战队从轨道上跳入虫群?
