Getting the Wii to run backup disks has never been quite as easy as running homebrew, but that might be about to change -- there's apparently a secret recovery mode that can be accessed with a special GameCube memory card. Not much is being revealed yet, but apparently if a "device" with a unique ID signature is present in the slot at boot, the Wii will drop into recovery mode and happily run whatever you throw at it, from backup disks to homebrew code. Hopefully we'll find out more soon -- video after the break.

Not so fast, recovery modes usually come into play before the OS/firmware boots in the case that the OS is corrupt. That's how you refurbish a Wii that won't start assuming the hardware is still good.

恢复模式一般都是在系统或者固件启动之前载入，载入之后，系统也就停止启动了。这也是翻新一台硬件完好但是启动不了的wii的方法。

This is why the pandora battery trick for the PSP still works, that's how Sony fixes them to resell. You sure can make a unit without a recovery mode, but imagine all the "dead" PSPs and Wiis they would just have to throw out instead of selling again.

因为任天堂之类的公司要***，买了行货的玩家遇到变砖之后应该可以选择回厂返修，恢复模式就是工厂修理砖头的方法，返修之后，机器翻新下又可以卖了。然后有人发现了wii的恢复模式（据说是一种特殊的Game Cude的记忆卡），认为在恢复模式加载的时候，添加点自己的程序，可能能解决掉Wii的数字版权管理，但是目前没有找到更多的东西，也没有人写出可以挂在恢复模式下运行的程序。目前最大的可能就是只要硬件完好，再大再结实的砖头也能修复。

Apparently tehskeen took a month-old video, coupled it with a paragraph of reality and a paragraph of rampant speculation and nonsense, and made it into a news story. This is undoubtedly going to spread around as these things do, so I’m going to stop it dead in its tracks.

It’s not a pandora battery. It won’t help custom firmwares. It has nothing to do with upgrading or downgrading IOS. It has limitations. It only helps with certain very specific cases.

I’ll post details about it when the time comes, since it’s certainly useful to fix certain types of bricks, but for now don’t believe any random nonsense that you hear about it.
