THE designers of an ultra-violent and bloody video game that has just hit store shelves say on-screen aggression can help players get the real thing out of their system.
Among the scenes depicted in blockbuster PS3 release God of War III are the central character gouging the eyes out of a rival before throwing him off a cliff.
Players of the Greek mythology based best-seller are also able to disembowel a mythical creature after defeating it in a combat soaked orgy of blood.
One of the game's creators, Jonathan Hawkins of US based Sony Santa Monica Studios, said such gameplay can act as a release valve for real world tensions.
The comments come as the debate intensifies on whether Australia should introduce an adults only R classification for video games .
Mr Hawkins said games such as God of War III, in which players can wield bloodthirsty weapons such as duelling chains and huge razor sharp blades, were able to touch people "at that really base, animalistic level".
Mr Hawkins and the game's lead animator Bruno Velazquez also supported the call for the introduction of an adults only R18+ game classification in Australia.
"People just need to be informed and it's good to provide that information to people so they can make the best decisions," Mr Velazquez said.
Petitions signed by more than 41,000 customers of interactive entertainment retailer Game have been delivered to each of the state attorneys-general just weeks before their next standing committee meeting in Melbourne on April 29.. |
