Re: Google DNS good for gaming?
Don't worry about Subnet. Default setting (if you are using 192.168.x.x type addressing) is 255.255.255.0 and changing it is not going to help you speed things up at all.
The default gateway is your router's address. This tells the PS3 where to look in order to get out to the Internet.
If you change this, your PS3 starts trying to look to another device to get outside to the Internet. And if that device is not a gateway, your PS3 will be lost and won't be able to connect to the Internet.
The DNS is about the only thing you can change.
And while you can change it to whatever you want, the practical uses of DNS are resolving addresses. And typically addresses don't change much, so once the address has been resolved it doesn't really need to be re-resolved unless it has been changed.
The DNS servers (especially google's) can help speed up this resolution. So, the computer or PS3 can put an IP address to a URL more quickly than with some other DNS servers).
Surfing internet and making initial connections can be sped up using optimized DNS servers. But they are not in general going to speed up the actual gaming process, since once those connections are made, they are made, DNS plays no part there. |
