09 January 2004 by Dave Roberts
Departing SCEE boss Chris Deering has kicked off 2004 by sketching the firm's timetable for introducing its first ever handheld games machine later this year - and hinted at a royalty price break for publishers.
In the week he moves on to become president of Sony Europe, with a remit extended to the firm's entire consumer electronics range, he also offered an update on PlayStation 2's phenomenal progress. He revealed that it will boast a PAL installed base of around 22 million units by the end of Sony's financial year (March 31st) and that lifetime sales in the territory will be "easily in excess of 50m units".
The PSP will be launched across the world in the final quarter of 2004, and takes its first major public bow at the Tokyo Game Show in the autumn. But the trade can look forward to getting to grips with the unit for the first time in Los Angeles in May, after Deering confirmed he'd be "very surprised" if the machine didn't figure in the manufacturer's E3 presence.
He added that the price would be "closer to ?00 than ?00", and that it would mark a break from the razor/razorblade model and wouldn't be a loss leader for a more lucrative, royalty-drenched software market. "The feeling is that this product should generate profit on hardware alone. We want to make it affordable for publishers to produce a wide range of entertainment and so royalties will be lower down in the mix this time round."
He went on to head off any confusion about the functionality of the PSP: "It traverses games, music and movies, but it will be sold as a games machine that does other stuff - albeit some pretty and important other stuff."
Meanwhile, PlayStation 2 is heading towards the end of its biggest year to date. In the 12 months ending March 31st, Deering believes PAL sales will total about eight million, a rise of roughly 15 per cent on FY'03.
"The story isn't anywhere near coming to end. Of all the PS2s that will be sold, over half have yet to be sold. And the same goes for three quarters of all software. Lifetime PAL sales will be easily in excess of 50 million, possibly much more in the chip set, depending on how it is exploited."
PS2’s performance has seen it establish clear domination over GameCube and Xbox, with a PAL base that Deering claims is “close to four times their combined total”. |
