I rarely complain about reviews simply because it is an opinion of one person. However the gamespot review rubbed me the wrong way for many reasons. The Camera can be wonky at times and cole is a bit clingy. The camera is the only real negative I've seen though as it does interfere with melee combat and certain segments of climbs. However the melee combat is very epic feeling and satisfying since Cole has some variety to his melee now.. not just *punch punch punch kick* that the first one had. Now Cole punches, kicks, swings his Amp , hooks enemies and spins around them before throwing them across the map.. etc. It is more vivid and epic feeling. The low angle by the camera during melee takes some getting used to though and does blind you to stuff around .
Anyhow... The reason why I think gamespot's review is rubbing people the wrong way is the fact it is not justified. There are people who own the game already legit, or have played the demo.. or even versions of it at expos. People know how the game handles, know how it plays... and it handles and plays almost like the first. Yet here comes Gamespot (9.0 on infamous) who starts ranting about all these problems INCLUDING the fact the screen goes grey when you take damage (this isn't new, many games have used it including infamous) ; and continues to rant about it as if the person clearly had no idea they could heal themselves. That is where the review derailed itself. The more they picked out stuff to complain about.. the more I began to realize they really didn't play the game. They ripped on the mini-bosses for no reason. Those actually make the game fun and give it a nice change of pace.
Remember.. Tom Mcshae may be the one who's name is on the review but I doubt only Tom played this game for a review. There is no way he did. Assuming he played the first and loved it, how is it he is so oblivious to the features in infamous 2? Doesn't he know how to heal himself with that grey screen? Doesn't he know infamous had mini-bosses all the time throughout the game to keep the pacing fresh? Boring pacing....okay so there are some dull moments (shown by a 2 sec clip of him riding a bus with nothing going on; gotta love that editing!). Also listen to the way he reads the review.. it isn't professional. It has an almost mocking tone to it like he's giggling to himself as he reads it off the paper. That is the problem with the review..
It lacks consistency, professionalism and clearly doesn't match what we've seen from the game. They also chose some of the WORST editing bits ... "Hmm how should we show off infamous2. I KNOW! Lets put in a 10 second segment of us just grinding aimlessly on power lines in the middle of a river" The review was an abomination in my book... I've seen worse yes; but that review did NOTHING to show off the game... It was just a 5 minute segment of someone complaining.
Maybe the game isn't a 9.0 in gamespot's book... but a 7.5 is a downright insult. I'm willing to bet the review will get pulled just like they had to pull a variety of reviews in the past for the same reason. This isn't the first time Gamespot has taken cheep shots at big title games and it won't be the last. There is a reason why they fire editors and editors quit on them... You're seeing it with the infamous 2 review. Blatant unprofessional-ism.
edit
and forgive me if I sound too harsh. I just do not like it when companies do stuff like this. I'd understand if it was a 7.5 and gamespot gave honest, legit reasons behind it... but they did not. They just ranted and didn't tell you anything about the game. |
