In the PlayStation 2 the chip used for Input/Output (the IOP) is actually a PlayStation 1 CPU. When you play PlayStation 1 games this chip is used for running the game for maximum compatibility, the downside is you lose out on all the PlayStation 2's Input/Output functionality; USB, FireWire, Ethernet, HDD, etc.
