Mancio gives Inter update Tuesday 4 December, 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Roberto Mancini wants to keep his Inter side grounded ahead of tomorrow’s game against Lazio and has given an insight into team selection.
The reigning champions have a three-point lead at the top and they prepare to face Lazio as second-placed Roma take on Cagliari in the rescheduled Week 11 fixtures.
Although Mancini has stressed that he feels the Scudetto battle is a two-horse race between Inter and Roma, he laughed off talk of breaking away from the chasing pack.
“Escape from the pack? And where are we going to go?” Mancio joked to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Nerazzurri secured a crucial 2-0 win over Fiorentina last weekend in a game that was touted as a potential banana skin.
“I said that it was an important win to get a good start to a diffi*** week with three games,” Mancini stressed.
“Then I said that it was a race between Roma and us, as we are the two best squads in my opinion.
“If we were to increase the distance to third it would make things diffi*** for the others, but it’s a long season.”
A struggling Lazio side arrive in Milan with confidence at a low following a 1-1 draw with Siena that left them poised above the relegation zone.
“Lazio aren’t on good form, but they are a team with three or four very dangerous players away from home,” Mancini continued.
“We need to be careful as tomorrow’s game will be very diffi*** and we will need to put in a great performance to win with tiredness kicking in. We can’t give them the space to cause us trouble.”
A study recently revealed that Mancini had Europe’s best winning percentage with 62.9 per cent of games won, compared to nearest rival Frank Rijkaard of Barcelona on 60.8.
“I read that and I don’t know what to think,” Mancio mused. “But I don’t believe it counts for much. If you are in charge of a big side you will win most games.
“Things have improved over the years and the negatives have been left in the past. Then we have brought in great players and they are responsible for the big wins.”
With a game against Torino on Sunday, Mancini may shuffle the deck for the Lazio encounter.
“Marco Materazzi will be back in either this game or Sunday’s against Torino,” he explained.
“With so many games we will have to see who is tired after Florence. Dejan S***ovic has only had this heel problem for four months! Sadly it’s a bad one, so you never know when it’s going to go away and come back.”
Luis Jimenez impressed against Fiorentina and looks likely to play an important role this term.
“I think that the time has arrived for Luis Jimenez,” the Beneamata boss said. “I don’t know whether he will play tomorrow or on Sunday, but he is on form.
“He has been in Italy for so long, it’s as if he were an Italian and if he were people would be talking about him as a phenomenon. He’s only 23 and he has the talent to become a great player, it’s up to him.”
Finally, Mancini responded to questions about an alleged approach from Sao Paulo for Adriano.
“I honestly don’t know anything about that,” he shrugged. “I have never spoken about it to Adriano and we have never considered it. I think we will have to wait and see how he feels when he returns to Italy.” |
