Inter hitmen line up Milan Monday 17 December, 2007

Inter’s goal heroes Julio Cruz and David Suazo were delighted to extend their lead at the top and are looking ahead to next weekend’s Milan derby.

The Nerazzurri have extended their lead at the top of the Serie A table to seven points with a 2-0 win in Cagliari as Roma were held by Torino.

After a tense first period, Argentine star Cruz opened the scoring after 57 minutes with his ninth goal of the campaign.

“The team is playing well and I am scoring goals, but more important than me scoring is that Inter are winning,” the former Bologna man grinned.

“In the first half we struggled a bit, but after the break things went well. It’s great to pull away from Roma and the others.”

Honduran hitman Suazo made an emotional return to the city where he made his name and hit the second goal to wrap up the points.

“I’m happy that we managed to get these three vital points after the way the games went this afternoon,” he said.

“Now we need to continue to play with this kind of intensity because we like being up here.
“It wasn’t easy to beat Cagliari as they had a good rearguard, but we still managed it and played well.”

Before the relaxation of the Christmas break, Inter have some serious business to attend to as they face city rivals Milan next weekend.

“It will be a special game and not just because we are top and they are world champions,” Cruz asserted.

“The derby is a game that everyone wants to play in. If the boss calls me, I will be ready,” Suazo agreed.

Mancini: I didn't offend Milan Sunday 16 December, 2007

Roberto Mancini concedes Inter didn’t put in their best game of the season and insists he never meant to snipe at rivals Milan.


The Coach caused controversy this week when he said he did “not care” who out of Boca Juniors and Milan would lift the Club World Cup, likening the tournament to “a friendly.”


The Rossoneri fans did not take kindly to this suggestion and after the 4-2 victory in Yokohama this morning celebrated with effigies of the trophy in front of the Inter headquarters.


“I want to compliment Milan and Carlo Ancelotti,” assured Mancini. “I did not want to offend anyone. I never said Milan were playing a friendly, but rather that the old format with a one-off match was much more enjoyable.”


This is the first time a European club has won the competition since it was made into a tournament with sides from various different confederations.


“I think Milan think the same way. A scandal was blown up out of nothing at all. When I am involved the media always try to twist my words and create trouble.”


The controversy could not be more ill timed, as next Sunday the Milan derby pits the two ‘cousins’ against each other at San Siro.


“I don’t want to say anything more about Milan. I will point out though that the League is a different mentality to Cup competitions.”


Inter have surged seven points clear at the top of the Serie A table after a tough but effective 2-0 victory at Cagliari.


“Cagliari were set out really well and put pressure on us. We didn’t do as well with the trident attack as we had done midweek at PSV Eindhoven,” he continued.


“The team was too static in the first half. Cristian Chivu is a great player who, like Nicolas Burdisso and Javier Zanetti, can take on a number of different roles. With so few midfielders at my disposal right now, he represents a good alternative.”


There is an injury crisis within the side ahead of their showdown next Sunday afternoon – the Milan derby.


“I doubt we’ll get any of them back by next week, but the real problem is Dejan S***ovic. If the tests don’t go to plan, he’ll need surgery and could be out for two months.”
