No it doesn't update automatically, even if you can access internet~
System update is only through the Wii system config menu ->system update,
half brick cannot even enter the Wii system config menu.

The only option is to wait for newer games which included the 3.0J firmware update patch, most likely Nintendo own games like Mario galaxy or metroid prime 3?

yes that's what I guessed, hope someone could post some information about that. Because my wii is turned on that automatically. wii is connected to wii24 and in order not to be updated I blocked my wii from my wifi router to avoid my wii killed by nintendo by evil purpose.

1, if you system is not a half brick, just turn wiiconnect24 function or turn off your system when you finish your play.....(red light)
2, for half brick US system, it can update from mail....i dont know how JPN's not working....
