While Sony has explained that developers will be able to optimize their games for 3D, it looks like the first batch of games is still getting considerably downscaled resolutions to make room for the added processing.
According to Digital Foundry, WipEout HD has had to change its maximum resolution from 1080p to 720p, while Motorstorm Pacific Rift has dropped from 720p to non-HD resolution. Sony Europe Senior Programmer Ian Bickerstaff explained, "Inevitably there are problems in achieving that performance, hardware upscaling is available and actually the good news is that upscaled 3D images look a lot better than upscaled 2D images."
For now, we're seeing development studios figuring out how to convert their games to 3D while preserving the original experience, which is great for anyone looking to take advantage of the PS3's 3D capabilities when the update arrives this summer. But the real performance test will come when developers have the chance to build entire games around stereoscopic 3D.
